I purchased this Hamer Chaparal Custom at Guitar Center on Sunset Blvd when I lived in CA. I always loved the boomerang inlays. I got this guitar used and it was somewhat beat-up, the original white finish was chipped and the original OBL (twin blade) pickups were replaced with a set of EMG's. On early Hamer Chaparals the bride pickup was a Slammer, and the two single-coils were twin blades made in West Germany by OBL. The guitar had the standard custom layout of original Floyd Rose, volume, tone and 3 mini switches. I was bored one day and while I liked the way the guitar played I didn't care for the plain white finish. I had a great idea and thought how hard could it be to refinish her in neon colors (think Steve Stevens Hamer with the 3 neon color pattern). After making a complete mess I delivered her to Dan and Lee at GMW. I asked Lee to convert her to a single humbucker layout and asked Dan to do a cool paint job. Lee plugged the holes left after removing the two single coil pickups, tone and the mini switches, then capped the entire face of the guitar. Often if you simply plug the holes without retopping, with time the paint settles and you will see the outline of the hole that was plugged. It is impossible to tell that this guitar was not a factory single hum, the work is that good! After Lee worked his magic, Dan sprayed the Silver Surfer graphic for me…it turned out incredible and while it is hard to capture in pictures the detail is amazing. You can not go wrong with GMW, they do amazing work. I am thrilled with how this one turned out.
