Without a doubt the two most influential and revolutionary guitar players from the late 70’s and early 80’s were Eddie Van Halen and Randy Rhoads. While some argue that both Randy and EVH had similar styles, their contributions to music, and more specifically guitar technique, is undeniable and consequentially each is hailed as a guitar god by their devoted fans. Unfortunately, we lost Randy all too early at the age of 25 on March 19th 1982, but the music he created (especially with Ozzy Osbourne) lives on today as a testament to his talent.

This guitar is a replica of Randy’s famous Polka Dot Harpoon head V with a twist, unlike the black with white polka dot paint on Randy’s original (built by Carl Sandoval), this GMW built replica has the reverse paint scheme, white with black polka dots. Unlike many guitarists, Randy’s guitar arsenal was limited for the most part to three instruments; a white Les Paul Custom, the Sandoval Polka Dot V (immortalized on the cover of the Tribute album) and later, a Jackson off set V which now bears his name. For many fans, the Polka Dot V was Randy’s trademark and to this day, is instantly identified with Randy’s music and guitar abilities.

This GMW Rock Replica Randy "Reverse" Rhoads Polka dot V has serial number 017 and features a neck-through-body construction with a quartersawn maple center blank and alder sides. Like Randy’s original, the 21 fret, 25 1/2" scale rosewood fingerboard has pearl bowtie inlays, 6150 medium jumbo fretwire, a bone nut and a 1 5/8" wide nut width. The guitar uses a steel block vintage style bent-plate tremolo, Schaller M6 mini tuners, black Gibson pickup mounting rings and DiMarzio solid white PAF (DP-103) and Super Distortion (DP-100) pickups.

The guitar looks great and personally I like the fact that it is a little different to Randy’s thanks to the “reverse” paint scheme. Lee (GMW) said that the reverse paint scheme is more tedious to do and as a result only two have been done to date (Dec 2004). The guitar sounds awesome and is of the highest quality. For those of you who are familiar with GMW’s work, you know what I mean when I say that the guitar is flawless. My only minor beef with this guitar is the location of the strap button. Like Randy’s, the strap button is located on the very tip of the wing, which for my personal taste makes the positioning of the guitar a little different compared to my other V style guitars. There is not much more to say other than I am extremely thrilled to have this guitar in my collection and I liked it so much that I immediately ordered another GMW guitar with a Polka Dot scheme, but a different body style.
